How the Public Can Help the Public Works Department this Spring

It’s been a spring to remember for all of us, including the West Goshen Public Works Department. “With the timing and preventative measures for COVID-19, we missed some of our usual spring activity like mulching or planting annuals and headed straight into mowing season,” said Director of Public Works Dave Woodward.

The shift in routine caused some changes for the Public Works Department as well. Parks and trails are open and have been getting an extraordinary amount of use. “We’ve increased our trash collection to accommodate the surge,” said Woodward. The department also secured areas that are currently closed such as playgrounds, courts, and specialty parks like the skate park and dog park.

The department is also responsible for maintaining the township’s wastewater system and has needed to conduct emergency sewer line repairs based on resident usage changes. Woodward shared a few things the public can do to help the Public Works Department:

  • Don’t flush cleaning wipes. They can damage the wastewater system (“Only flush toilet paper, please!” Woodward requested).
  • Keep your distance when walking. Woodward reported that many residents are eager to chat with Public Works personnel, but please remember social distancing guidelines.
  • Slow down when driving around work crews.
