Last month, the SAC conducted a 5-question survey of WGT’s residents regarding single-use plastic bags. We are grateful to the 330 respondents who completed the survey and wish to share our key findings. More than 98% of residents do their shopping at big chain grocery stores (e.g., Acme) where plastic bags are readily available. When asked if major supermarkets should stop providing single-use plastic bags, 39.1% of responses strongly agreed, 19.7% agreed, 16.7% strongly disagreed, and 11.8% disagreed; 3.0% were unsure. Clearly, the majority (58.8%) of WGT residents are in favor of a ban on single-use plastic bags. Reducing bag use can mitigate harmful impacts to oceans, rivers, lakes, forests and the wildlife that inhabit them, as well as relieve pressure on landfills and waste management. The full survey results can be found here.
